From Louis de Broglie to your TV set, a hundred years of history...
The year 2023 marks one hundred years since the pioneering discoveries of Louis de Broglie, one of the fathers of quantum mechanics. His work, crowned by a Nobel Prize in Physics for the "discovery of the wave nature of the electron", showed that all particles behave like waves under certain conditions. Thus, when an electron is confined to a very small space, its fundamental wavelength decreases and its energy increases, in the same way that a piano string emits a higher-pitched sound when its length is reduced. This behavior inspired the first research, forty years ago, into semiconductor nanocrystals, nano-sized crystals (typically 3 to 20 nm) in which electrons are ultra-confined. Remarkably, some of these nanocrystals can emit light varying from red to green to blue simply by changing their size, but not their composition. These are now being used in the latest generation of televisions, as they offer a much richer color palette than previous technologies. Several decades may seem a long time to go from the first studies to consumer applications. In academic laboratories, it has been necessary to master the size of nanocrystals, requiring new synthesis processes, to passivate the surface of nanocrystals by adding a shell, and more recently to find the least toxic materials possible (excluding cadmium in particular). In the electronics industry, it required to work with totally new materials and objects, and dare to introduce them into heavy micro-technology processes. Research in the field of semiconductor nanocrystals remains very active, for lasers, photovoltaic cells and single-photon emitters, or for infrared photodetectors, as illustrated by one of the articles in this newsletter.

"Welcoming Internationals to Lille" international chair to work on acoustic clamps |
Acoustic tweezers can be used to manipulate, organize and test the mechanical properties of microparticles and microorganisms. They can operate both in vivo and in vitro, in transparent or opaque media, and with forces several orders of magnitude greater than their optical or magnetic equivalents. |

You will no longer turn a deaf ear!!! |
Towards a robotized cochlear implant. This technology is currently being used to robotize a cochlear implant in the ROBOCOP project. The aim here is to meet a need of the surgeon, who has no perception of what is happening in the cochlea during manual insertion, and a failed or incomplete insertion can lead to poor hearing performance post-operatively. |
